Welcome to the Department of Anesthesia within the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University. The department has experienced steady growth over the last 10 years and is currently comprised of 34 full-time faculty and 165 part-time faculty.
Our major strength is people and several members of the department are in significant leadership roles within the hospitals and academic programs. Our hospital partners include Hamilton Health Sciences and St. Joseph's Healthcare locally, but we also reach out into the community through the Waterloo Regional Campus and the Niagara Regional Campus.

This presentation will discuss key concepts and articles that led to a better understanding and improvement of procedural skills training and assessment, through the lens of Dr Bilgic's own research.
Procedural Skills Training and Assessment
Procedural skills are an important part of patient care for many specialties, and over the years, with changes in technologies, procedural techniques, and practice routines of physicians, there has been and continue to be changes in the needs of trainees when it comes to procedural skills training. Additionally, procedural skills are often challenging for residents to gain competence. Therefore, this presentation will discuss key concepts and articles that led to a better understanding and improvement of procedural skills training and assessment, through the lens of Dr Bilgic's own research.
Dr Elif Bilgic is an Assistant Professor and Education Scientist in the Department of Pediatrics and MERIT program. She received her PhD from McGill University in Surgical Education, and completed 2 postdoctoral fellowships at McGill; one at the Steinberg Centre for Simulation and Interactive Learning, and second at the Simulation, Affect, Innovation, Learning, and Surgery Lab, second fellowship as a CIHR awarded fellow. Her research program is in the field of performance assessment in the simulation and clinical settings, focusing on technology, innovation, and collaboration.
